Morgan 4/4 Remap - Reliable Performance

There's a buzz among Morgan owners in the UK at the moment and part of it is due to the healthy improvement in both power and torque our work gives their Ford Simga engined 4/4.

The Morgan 4/4 is a true enthusiasts car. Uncomfortable, uncompromised in its focus and unfashionably retro it's a car we love. When you sit in the drivers seat, with the view of the long bonnet and flat dashboard in front of you, you can't help but feel as though you've stepped back in time. Equally archaic is the tiny interior. If you weren't familiar with your passenger before heading off for your drive, you'll certainly be familiar with them by your journey's end. There's no room to move or relax but that doesn't matter for the simple truth of the 4/4 is simply this... it's a car to have fun in. And fun you'll have.

When you buy a Morgan, you don't purchase the complete package. What you buy is your starting point in Morgan ownership. It's up to you to decide what Morgan you want to own. And part of that decision process is to decide how you want it to perform. At Mobile Remaps, our Morgan customers want a vehicle that is more responsive, more drivable a much more excitable than factory standard. And that's what we have repeatedly delivered for our customers.

When we visit a rolling road, it's rare that we find a car manufacturer actually delivers the power and torque they claim at factory but, Morgan's Ford Sigma engined 4/4 delivered exactly what it promised; 115bhp at 6170rpm and 98ft/lb of torque at 4615rpm in standard form. From a little 1600cc non-turbo petrol engine, that's a healthy set of figures and in a vehicle as light and agile as the Morgan 4/4 it's a fun engine to engage with. However those figures can be improved. And fortunately with one of Mobile Remaps' power maps both power and torque can be dramatically improved. Recently we had an opportunity to have one of our remapped Morgan 4/4's put on the rolling road at Dave Walker's (of Emerald ECU) workshop. The results speak for themselves. Our customer's car produced 136.9bhp and 118ft/lb of torque. Whilst the maximum power was produced almost 500rpm higher up the rev range, the extra 20ft/lb of torque provided from the remap was produced 400rpm lower in the rev range when compared with the Sigma's standard engine map, making a huge difference to the drivability of the Morgan 4/4. It's no wonder then the Moggy's owner said the vehicle's performance had been 'transformed'.

Mercedes Remap

Above is a typical ecu remapping example of cost effective performance improvement. Mercedes produced two versions of the diesel B-Class; the B180 with a 109 bhp 2.0 liter diesel engine and the B200 which had the 140 bhp 2.0 diesel engine.

Although the above example is a B180 Mercedes with the less powerful engine, courtesy of our Mercedes remapping service, the above B-Class now boasts 170 bhp with torque rising from the vehicle's standard 250 nm up to 350 newton meters. That's a healthy 55% improvement in power and a 40% improvement in torque for as little as £275,  saving the owner thousands of pounds if they wanted similar performance from Mercedes.

If you want your car remapped, then call Mobile Remaps on 01223 855 491 and we'll be happy to talk with you. Or you can fill out one of our contact forms and we'll call you!

Diesel Particulate Filters... smoke 'n' mirrors

4/16/2015

Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) are causing a lot of frustration to both consumers and the auto industry at the moment. This is because DPF’s are costly to replace, deemed illegal to remove (yet are easy to do so), aftermarket DPFs don’t work as they should and when all the figures are in, diesel particulate filters don’t actually appear to help emissions or the environment (the pro’s and con’s cancel each other out) which is what they are designed to achieve.

What is a Diesel Particulate Filter? A DPF (also known as FAPs) are an additional filter fitted to the exhaust system of a diesel vehicle and is designed to filter out (catch to you and me) unburnt soot particles from exiting the exhaust into the environment. Putting it bluntly then, a DPF is designed to clog up.

Since 2009 as part of the requirement to meet Euro5 emission standards, all diesel vehicles produced have a Diesel Particulate Filter fitted as standard. Although some vehicles produced as early as 2006 have had DPFs fitted at the factory if those vehicles didn’t meet the previous Euro3 and Euro4 emission standards.

So oversimplifying the above, a DPF is designed to stop black smoke coming out of the exhaust system of a diesel vehicle and, by stopping such an unpleasant sight, be better for the environment. Why do we have such a cynical point of view? Our cynicism is based on the fact that if DPFs were truly effective and beneficial for the environment then removing them would cause, without question, a vehicle to fail its emission test and yet this isn't unequivocally so. And we secretly believe the governing bodies know this and that is why legislation introduced in Feb 2014 is worded very carefully to say; “changing any part of the exhaust or emissions system with a part other than the vehicle manufacturer’s original part that may change the emissions could be an offence”. Note, it does not say ‘is’ an offence but ‘could be’. In other words, if a diesel particulate filter was truly effective in reducing emissions (rather than causing frustration to the industry and vehicle owners alike) the legislative wording regarding the removal of a DPF would be much tighter. There are two quick points to be made regarding this:

  1. Because of the above legislation it is true to say that it is not illegal to remove a DPF from a vehicle. It is however, illegal to drive your vehicle on UK public roads if it does not meet the emissions standards it was designed to meet.
  2. If you have an aftermarket diesel particulate filter fitted (not an OEM part) and it is not as effective as the original DPF specified by the manufacturer, then based on the wording above, you could still be illegally driving your vehicle on the road!

As part of the legislation introduced in 2014, MOT tests now include a visual inspection of the exhaust system. If during the visual inspection the DPF is not present where it was otherwise fitted as standard equipment, your vehicle will be deemed to no longer comply with emission standards (even if it did comply!) and will automatically fail its MOT. In short then, to pass a MOT your vehicle must have its diesel particulate filter fitted.

In our next blog, we’ll look at why despite being a great idea, we feel DPF’s are flawed in their execution when it comes to being beneficial to the environment as well as why they’re a pain in the backside to vehicle owners.
